I am re-posting the rules to refresh everyone's memories regarding proper content and flaming. I still think that it is possible to have lively discussions without flaming other members. If you have a particular issue with something that is said on the list, it is best to address this in a private e-mail to the person involved.
Also, the policy on lurking should be noted.

Nature of the List

1. GSPBREEDERS-L is a list for people who are interested in breeding, conformation and living with GSPs and want a free exchange with people who share their passion for the breed. It provides, for people who choose to share their lives with GSPs, a source for gaining knowledge and insight, as well as an outlet for sharing "silliness" and pain with people of similar interest.
2. GSPBREEDERS-l avoids at all costs abusive posting, flames, and flame wars. This is not the forum for discussing either GSPCA business or hunting except as they relate to breeding decision. This is not a place to sell products or advertise. Please NO CHAIN LETTERS or excessive signature files. Behavior of this nature on this list is not welcome.
3. GSPBREEDERS-L is a forgiving list, tolerating chat outside of strictly dog related matters. In general, please put an appropriate SUBJECT in your header so that people can read accordingly. If the subject changes from the original....please change the subject line.
4. GSPBREEDERS-L encourages friendly contact between individual subscribers, and asks that you put your name and e-mail address at the end of every post.
5. GSPBREEDERS-L is a non-lurking list. Members are asked to post to the group when they expect to have a long absence from the group, i.e., judging assignments, vacations, work obligations, illness. A post should be sent to the group upon return. Lurking is considered posting less than 1 time per month. (allowances are made for special situations)
6. DON'T attach long files to your messages, such as PHOTO scans, etc. Files of this nature should be sent privately. If posted publicly, they may cause problems for individual machines. Members are encouraged to edit all posts "re-posted" in order to avoid very long "repeat" posts. Also, all code and headers that are not relevant should be edited out.
7. Treat all members as you would want to be treated. Be polite at all times. No negative discussions of judges, individual breeders or specific dogs should be posted, however positive is OK if shared in an anecdotal fashion.

GSPBREEDERS-L Membership Requirements
1. After the initial sign up period (ending Feb 21st 1998), new members must be sponsored by a list member. It is not imperative that members be breeders, but breeding and conformation are the main subjects and members must show some interest in these subjects
2. ALL MEMBERS are required to post a Introduction message. We want to know your name, your kennel name, years in the breed, part of the country and some "humorous" thing about you that we might not know. Anything more that you want to tell us is more than welcome.
3. GSPBREEDERS-L membership is a PRIVILEGE not a right, and membership can be
canceled at any time and for any reason by the List Owner.
4. Once a month, a list of all members e-mail addresses along with their names will be printed to the list. Disclosure of your name is a requirement for membership.
5. This is a private list, there is no outside posting allowed and there are a limited number of members at this time. This is necessary to keep the "no-lurking" rule. Changes may be made as the list progresses and the needs of the list are more defined.
6. ABSOLUTELY NO forwarding or re-posting of posts that appear on this list without the permission of the author and the list owner.
7. Acceptance of membership constitutes acceptance of the Membership Procedure and Nature of the List.

Nomination Procedure
Membership is closed and will be opened periodically. At that time, members may make nominations and at least 2 other members must post a positive endorsement. Negative opinions are to be sent privately to the list owner and will be given proper attention.

Arbitration Code
Although I hope that it is not necessary, I feel that some procedures should be in place in case such action is needed.
If a complaint is received by the List Owner about a member, they will be notified. The List Owner will mediate between members. If a mutually agreeable conclusion cannot be mediated, and the offense is serious, the List Owner may cancel the offender's subscription. Final determination of a subscriber's status rests solely with the List Owner.
Examples of serious offenses:
Flaming a member, a judge, or a breeder by name or implication.
Repeated, "accidental" posts to the group (habitual).
1st offense, warning
2nd offense, 2 weeks on "read only" status
3rd offense, 1 months "read only", 6 months "monitored posting"
Soliciting the group for money or support for "private" gain.
Misrepresenting yourself, i.e., using an alias or a "false" kennel name for malicious purposes.
Knowingly presenting to the group information that the poster "knows" to be false.
Forwarding or sending, BY ANY MEANS, any post from this private list without the express permission of the author.

I want to define what I consider to be a lurker....as this will become
important in the future. I intend to crack down on lurkers in the months
to come.
As described in the Welcome file, lurking is posting less than once a
month. this is pretty general. Simply posting once a month by saying "I
am here" or "I agree" does not constitute participation. This is a
PARTICIPATION list!!
I know that there are quite a few people who only read once or twice a
week. By the time that they read posts, we have already moved on to
another subject. That is NO reason not to post!! Many times the
discussions on this list simply dies out due to lack of interest......if
you read a post that was written earlier and you have something to
add.....send it!! It may spark someone elses interest and lead to some
meaningful discussion.
My feeling is.....if you never have any questions to ask.....or answers to
give, then maybe this list is not for you.
Lurkers are, to me, like people who eavesdrop on your conversations......it
makes me feel uncomfortable.
OTOH, if you are a regular contributor and you hit on to a busy time when
you do not have time to talk...that is perfectly understandable, we all do
have regular lives...right??...do some of you have interests OTHER than
dogs?? :-) If you have a reason why you will not be participating, drop
me a line or send a quick note to the list....that does not constitute
lurking.
Please feel free to comment either privately or to the list about this issue.

I am excited to be able to host this venue for the discussion of issues relating to the breeding and conformation exhibiting of the GSP. I have tried to keep the rules to a minimum but feel that a few guidelines are necessary. Below is a synopsis of the Nature of the List and the few Rules that we have.
We have a web site listing members, their email address, and any personal web sites. We also have "litters planned", "List rules" and a few classic posts listed. Nomination Procedure
Membership is closed, it may be opened periodically by the listowner, but will maintain a membership of no more than 75.
When opened, members may make nominations, only 2 nominations per member. That member will be designated as the "Sponsor" of that member and will be called upon to mediate if problems arise. These names should be sent to the listowner gsp1@ksu.edu BEFORE the name is posted to the group. People who have been previously turned down for membership, may be re-nominated at the discretion of the listowner.
Once the listowner has approved the nomination, the member should send, to the list, a post introducing their nominee to the list and telling why they feel they would make a good addition to the list. At least 3 other members must post a positive endorsement of each nominee.
Negative opinions are to be sent privately to the list owner and will be dealt with individually.
There will be a period of 10 days from the time the name is posted to the list to allow for endorsements and dissentions to be registered.
One member of the family can be a member without inclusion of the other.
Reasons for rejection of nomination:
No person will be allowed on the list that has a history of combative behavior on another list. This behavior is unwelcome on this list and will not be tolerated.
Persons who have displayed, repeatedly, overt acts of unsportsmanlike conduct are not welcome.
